⛰️ High Altitude Adventures: Cascades & Monolith

These activities take place on the high plateaus and mountains of Mauritius, offering challenging terrain and panoramic views that stretch across the island and over the ocean.

1. Les 7 Cascades (Tamarind Falls)

This adventure is a series of waterfall hikes situated in the elevated central region of the island, near the village of Henrietta.

• Location: High plateau area between Curepipe and Black River Gorges.
• Altitude Range: The hike typically moves between 230 meters (755 feet) and 501 meters (1,644 feet) above sea level.
• Difficulty: Moderate to Hard. The trail is often steep and can be very slippery, especially after rain. A guide is highly recommended.
• Highlights: You descend (and ascend) through a valley, passing behind waterfalls and swimming in natural basins. The main waterfall system is reputedly the highest in Mauritius (around 293 meters / 961 feet total drop).

2. Le Morne Brabant Hike

This is a globally famous hike to the summit of a basaltic monolith, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its history as a refuge for runaway slaves.

• Location: Extreme southwestern tip of the island.
• Summit Altitude: 556 meters (1,824 feet) above sea level.
• Difficulty: Moderate to Strenuous. The initial section is easy, but the final half is very challenging, often requiring hand-over-hand scrambling and climbing over rocks.
• Highlights:
  • Historical Significance: Deep cultural and historical value.
  • Views: Panoramic 360° views of the coast, mountains, and the famous “Underwater Waterfall” optical illusion.
  • Duration: 3 to 5 hours round trip. An early morning start (around 6:00 AM) is essential to avoid intense heat and sun exposure.
